18/05/2025
From 15th to 17th May 2025, the 40th annual congress of the German-Austrian-Swiss Society for Orthopaedic-Traumatological Sports Medicine (Gesellschaft für orthopädisch-traumatologische Sportmedizin, GOTS) was held in Krems an der Donau in Austria. This year’s highlight was the honour granted to team of Luxembourg, with Luxembourg selected as the official guest nation.
A 15-member team from the four Luxembourgish institutions as the Sports Clinic of the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), the Luxembourg Institute of Research in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Science (LIROMS) as well as the Luxembourg Institute of High Performance in Sports (LIHPS), and the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), provided a significant contribution in the congress’ program.
A total of 14 oral presentations provided by Prof. R. Seil, Dr. P. Diniz, Dr. C. Mouton, Dr. A Fernandez, Dr. J. Fayad, E. Besenius, Dr. A. Aguilaniu, M. Jacobs, Dr. C. Tooth, Dr. F. Garcia and Dr. C. Deprouw, showcased cutting-edge research, clinical experiences and innovations in treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries, and performance optimization. Additionally, the team submitted three scientific posters, which were presented for the congress jury by C. Wojtylka, Dr. Y. Fonteyn and Dr. P. Diniz, displaying the ongoing commitment to continuing research in the field.
Furthermore, Prof. Romain Seil was one of the two honorary guests of the congress. Well-known in the field of orthopaedic sports medicine, he was warmly recognized for his many years of work in advancing clinical innovation and fostering international collaboration. During his honorary lecture he talked about “Meniscus in Sports Medicine”, a topic he revisited also during the OR-video discussion.
Moreover, as head of the GOTS-committee for children’s sports orthopaedics Dr. Christian Nührenbörger organised and chaired a session focused on children and adolescents in elite sports.
As the congress concluded, the work of the Luxembourgish team was rewarded with two prestigious recognitions:
The team around Camille Wojtylka and Dr. Tiago Neto received the 3rd prize in the poster competition for their poster on “Biomechanical assessment of ACLR young athletes - a testing protocol to support the return-to-sport process”.
The publication about “Safeguarding the young athlete in sport” co-authored by Dr. Christian Nührenbörger was awarded 3rd place for the “Paper of Highest Public Interest 2024.”
These achievements highlight Luxembourg’s growing visibility and excellence in the international sports medicine and performance science landscape and highlight the value of its cross-institutional collaboration in research and clinical care. Alongside presenting their work, the team of Luxembourg gained valuable knowledge and inspiration throughout the wide range of lectures and workshops offered by other experts in the field.
